Small biotech stock pops on FDA approval

Shares of Nuvo Research (TSX: T.NRI) shot up 30% to 45 cents on Thursday as the drug development company and Covidien (NYSE: COV) announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the New Drug Application for Pennsaid Topical Solution (diclofenac sodium topical solution) 1.5% w/w. Pennsaid Topical Solution is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee.

Biopharm stock soars on FDA ruling

Æterna Zentaris (TSX: T.AEZ) shares shot up 30% to $1.45 on Wednesday as the global biopharmaceutical firm focused on endocrine therapy and oncology announced that Keryx Biopharmaceuticals, its partner and licensee for perifosine in the North American market, has received orphan-drug designation for this compound from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of multiple myeloma.
