Technical Search

Technical Search is a tool which allows you to screen our database to develop a list of companies which match a particular technical analysis you wish to perform. You can base your search on some, or all, of the following input parameters, or leave all fields blank to do a global search.

StockScores

Stockscore
Based on a proprietary model that combines over 30 technical analysis indicators and factors, the Stockscore is a measure of technical analysis strength or weakness. Using the most recent 200 days of market trading data for a specific stock, this score is updated daily to reflect a stock's momentum, liquidity and price behavior. Stocks that have not traded for at least 200 trading days will not have a Stockscore, as there is insufficient trading data. The scale for the Stockscore is 1 to 100.

Rating
The Stockscore provides a numerical rank of an individual stock's technical analysis strength. The score can be translated into one of five rating categories as follows: –Scores greater than 70

Bullish
This stock may be worth considering as a buying opportunity. Our model indicates that the stock has good potential to go higher in the short term, and is worth taking time to consider. Complete your due diligence on this stock so that you can make your own judgement on the quality of the company before making a decision, and remember that our score is valid for the price that the stock is at when we applied the score. Of course, a score of 98 has more potential than a score of 72, but all stocks in this range deserve your consideration. In addition, if you may wish to short this stock, you may wish to consider covering the short position.

– Scores between 60 and 70

Optimistic
Market activity is beginning to indicate improved optimism for this stock and it should be put on a watch list as a stock to consider. If you already like this company's fundamentals, you should now look for the signals that the time is right to own the stock. If you own the stock, you are likely in good shape but may want to consider taking profits if profits are high. If you are short the stock, you should approach your position with some caution and watch for the signal that it is time to cover.

– Scores between 40 and 60

Neutral
Market activity is doing little to indicate the future direction of this stock. The stock is likely in a trading range, or, if it has been in a strong trend over the recent past, it may be starting to reverse that trend. If you own this stock and are in a profitable position, you should consider whether the stock is reversing and it may be time to take your money off the table.

– Scores between 30 and 40

Cautionary
Market activity is beginning to indicate caution is warranted for this stock and it should be put on a watch list as a stock to sell or short. If you believe that the company's fundamentals do not warrant the valuation the stock has received, you should now look for the signals that the time is right to short the stock. If you are already short the stock, you are likely in good shape but may want to consider taking profits if profits are high. If you are long the stock, you should approach your position with some caution and watch for the signal that it is time to sell.

– Scores less than 30

Bearish
Market activity is very negative on this stock and it may be very risky to hold this stock. Shorting opportunities should be explored after doing the appropriate due diligence. If the stock has suffered a major sell off already, traders may want to watch for signs of a reversal bounce as a long trading opportunity, but be sure to watch for the technical reversal which will likely be accompanied by an increase in the stockscore.

It is important to consider where the score has come from. A stock that moves from 60 to 75 is likely a better opportunity than one that moves from 90 to 75. Also, consider where the stock is relative to the score. Again, a stock that has made considerable gains of late may have a good score, but entering the stock given the gains it has made will be riskier. Risk is factored into the model, but common sense is still essential.

Finally, remember that this model is generated by a computer and should not be used to make investment decisions. It is a tool that can help you find opportunities from the thousands of stocks that are out there. However, you have to do the work to take the list of stocks with the scores you want down to the stocks you want to put your money on.

Smoothed Stock Score - a 10 day Exponential Moving Average of the Stockscore.

40 Day High - indicates whether the most recent Stockscore is the highest the Stockscore has been in the past 40 trading days.

40 Day Low - indicates whether the most recent Stockscore is the lowest the Stockscore has been in the past 40 trading days.

Analysts use this indicator to measure whether the market activity is Bullish or Bearish as a measure of supply and demand.

Volume Price Trend - similar to the Williams Volume Accumulation indicator, the Volume Price Trend indicator measures the momentum of the price activity of a stock weighted by the volume traded. Momentum Study Calculations

Stochastics - based on the hypothesis that stocks tend to close at or near their daily highs just prior to the stock topping out and suffering from profit taking, or, that stocks tend to close at or near their daily lows just prior to the stock bottoming out or benefiting from bottom fishing. This indicator measures whether a stock appears Overbought or Oversold. The Overbought condition implies the stock is too high and likely to head lower, and the Oversold condition implies the stock too low and likely to head higher. This indicator works well for stocks that are trading in ranges, but is often ineffective when a stock is making an abnormal directional move because of a significant change in the underlying company's fundamental value.

RSI - relying on the recent price change over the past 10 days, this indicator considers this price change to determine whether a stock appears Overbought or Oversold using the idea that stocks which make strong moves in one direction or another tend to encourage profit taking or bargain hunting. The Overbought condition implies the stock is too high and likely to head lower, and the Oversold condition implies the stock too low and likely to head higher.

MACD - this indicator utilizes two exponential moving averages of different time durations to measure the price momentum of the underlying security. An exponential moving average of the difference of these two averages provides the MACD signal line. If the difference between the MACD and the MACD signal line is positive, this indicator is deemed Bullish, if it is negative, Bearish. Technical analysts also consider the plot of this difference and seek divergences between the plot and the performance of the stock as an indication of possible trend change.

Trend

Short Trend - using the slope of the recent 10 days trading activity, this indicator measures whether the 10 day trend is Bullish or Bearish.

Medium Trend - using the slope of the recent 40 days trading activity, this indicator measures whether the 40 day trend is Bullish or Bearish.

Long Trend - using the slope of the recent 100 days trading activity, this indicator measures whether the 100 day trend is Bullish or Bearish.
